Through deforestation, we not only lose the beauty of forests, we could also see catastrophic environmental damage. “Deforestation alters the hydrologic cycle, altering the amount of water in the soil and groundwater and the moisture in the atmosphere”2. Models showing complete deforestation indicate a reduction in atmospheric humidity. The current “patchwork” deforestation is resulting in increased rainfall over the deforested areas. This is attributed to the higher ground temperatures causing greater evaporation and cloud formation. As the amount of water in the soil and groundwater changes, groundwater systems turn to surface runoff, creating flash flooding and increased erosion. Surface water travels faster than ground water, causing it to return to the ocean faster, effecting water evaporation into the atmosphere. |
