What makes fabric "Organic"?
Organic crops are grown without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. This is true, not only for organic food, but also for organic clothing, organic bedding, and other organic textile items.
In addition, federal regulations prohibit the use of genetically engineered seed for organic farming. All items sold as organic in the United States must meet strict federal regulations covering how the crop is grown, e.g. cotton, and how the animal is raised, e.g. wool.
Organic cotton used in organic clothing and organic bedding as well as organic wool in organic blankets must all be certified to the USDA NOP (National Organic Program) standards to be sold as "organic" in the U.S.
See our articles on our store site about organic fabrics versus non-organic and so called "natural." We say "so called natural" because this is usually the same as non-organic. |
