80% percent of the diapering in this nation is done with disposables. That is 18 BILLION diapers a year. Each diaper has an outer layer of waterproof polypropylene and an inner layer of fluff made from wood pulp. Those 18 billion diapers add up to 82,000 tons of plastic a year and 1.3 million tons of wood pulp, which equates to about 250,000 trees, plus sodium polyacrylate, a super absorbent polymer (SAP) that can absorb up to 100 times its weight in liquid. SAPs can cause severe skin infections or worse. After a few hours of use these materials are disposed of, primarily to landfills, where they sit entombed, with out degrading for several hundred years. |
