The polyurethane foam used as the primary cushioning material in conventional mattresses is a petroleum product and it burns furiously when ignited. To reduce flammability, manufacturers are required by law to add fire retardant chemicals called PDBEs to all polyurethane foam sold in the North America. As you sleep each night, PDBEs leach out from your mattress to your skin and they are also found in the household dust under your bed from the foam as it breaks down over time. Tests of breast milk are indicating that PDBEs are one of the fastest rising environmental contaminants, and they build up in your body in a way similar to the banned PCBs. PDBEs have already been banned in Europe because of their linkage to breast and liver cancers, but they are required by law in North America. Some experts estimate that millions of future cases of cancer will result from PDBE contamination, and the only way to avoid it is to get an organic mattress that is not made from polyurethane foam. |
